Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs got off to a relatively slow start last year, struggling through the regular season with a meandering offense before ultimately winning a second straight Super Bowl.

While it worked out well in the end, the team understands the need to get off to a stronger start, especially offensively. To his credit, Mahomes knows and readily admits that they didn’t meet their own standards for most of 2023.

Even though we won the Super Bowl last year, we felt like we didn’t play our best football, especially offensively,” Mahomes told reporters. “It’s our goal to be better that way. And come in with that mentality every single day.”

The Chiefs fell in Week 1 to the Lions before rattling off six straight wins, though issues at wide receiver left the offense frustrated. While Mahomes set a career-best in completion percentage (67.2%), he threw for nearly 1,100 fewer yards and 14 fewer TDs than the 2022 campaign. Things were different, and Mahomes is determined to correct the course this time.

“Obviously, the end result was awesome, but I think a lot of us still have a weird feeling in our mouth because we really didn’t play football the way we wanted to play all year long,” Mahomes continued. “It wasn’t fun. Every single week, trying just to continue to get better and better and results not paying off the way you want them to. It wasn’t a lot of fun

It’s rare for a team that just won two straight Super Bowls to feel like they didn’t play well, but that’s the nature of this era of Chiefs football. Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the rest of the roster understand the historical implications of a potential three-peat.
