NFL Bombshell: Andy Reid Pushes Patrick Mahomes to Drastically Change His Game – Fans Stunned!
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has just about seen it all during his seven-year NFL career.
And through it all, Mahomes has conquered almost everything that has been thrown at him. That begs the question, how does one continue to stay hungry after having so much success early in their career? A large part of that answer is simple – good coaching.
Mahomes and Andy Reid are already one of the best quarterback/head coaching duos of all time. They not only complement each other well, but they also push each other. That is why, despite all their success, the Chiefs continue to stay on top of the league and will for the foreseeable future.
Mahomes spoke to the media following the Chiefs’ last day of mandatory minicamp. When asked if he is still learning new things this far into his career, Mahomes noted that while he’s plenty comfortable, Reid and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo continue to challenge him to get better.
“Yeah, I think this is probably the most comfortable I think I’ve felt of just being able to not let something I guess affect me.” Mahomes said. “When you go against (Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) Spags, you’re not going to be right 100% of the time and there’s been times where I’ve lost on blitzes and Spags gets me with a new pressure that he’s working on. I think it’s just being able to (say), ‘Alright, let’s just the ball out of my hands, get it to the check-down or whatever that is and then live to play another play.’ I think that’s just something that I’ve felt more comfortable with. I think it’s been cool that we’ve been trying – (Head) Coach (Andy) Reid has gone back to my old days, he’s forcing me to push the ball down the field (and) if I don’t, he throws little jabs at me like, ‘Oh, you want to throw the check-down here.’ I’m just like, ‘I got you Coach, we’re going to push it.’ It’s been fun, it’s been a great camp (and) like I said I love the competing, I think that has been the biggest thing, the competing on both sides of the ball, it’s been awesome.”
Mahomes being able to go against Spagnuolo’s defense each day in practice strengthens his game that much more. Keeping Mahomes honest and showing him disguises and exotic blitzes pay big dividends as he faces off against other elite defenses of the NFL. That was proven last year when he defeated defensive juggernaut teams in the Baltimore Ravens and San Fransisco 49ers during the postseason.
Perhaps the most interesting part of Mahomes’ quote was when he said that Reid is forcing him to push the ball down the field more. With the additions of wide receivers Hollywood Brown and Xaiver Worthy, it seems fairly obvious that the Chiefs will stretch the field a lot more than last year.
K.C.’s style of offense is poised to look more like the days when it had playmakers such as Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins. Mahomes having those types of weapons again combined with more experience is a scary thought for the rest of the league. Lastly, but certainly not least, don’t forget about pass catchers Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice working underneath in the middle of the field.
