Even in the preseason, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes continues to be a must-watch player whenever he steps onto the football field. During the team’s 24-23 loss to the Detroit Lions on Saturday, Mahomes delivered another jaw-dropping moment, executing a behind-the-back pass to tight end Travis Kelce on a third-and-short to keep the Chiefs’ drive alive in the first quarter

Mahomes and Kelce have already solidified themselves as one of the most dynamic duos in NFL history, and Saturday’s improvised play only added to their legend. What made the moment even more remarkable was that it began with a rare instance of miscommunication between the two future Hall of Famers.

Later in the broadcast, Kelce shared his perspective on the play. Despite not hearing the play call clearly, he showcased the unique chemistry he shares with Mahomes, allowing them to create magic on the field even when things don’t go according to plan.

After the game, Mahomes revealed that the initial play called for an RPO with Kelce running an out route. However, as the ball was snapped, he quickly realized that things weren’t going as expected.

“We had the leverage we wanted, but I should’ve known something was up when he asked me what route he had while motioning over,” Mahomes explained. “He wasn’t where I expected him to be, so I decided to run. But then, I saw him turn around, so I just threw it to him.”

Although Mahomes only played in the first quarter before being replaced by backup quarterback Carson Wentz, he led the team to two field goal drives and finished the game with 93 passing yards, completing eight of his 14 pass attempts. Still, his behind-the-back pass stole the show, becoming the main topic of conversation post-game.

“It wasn’t how it was drawn up, but I always told you, it has to happen naturally,” Mahomes said, reflecting on the play. “I can’t force it. So, like I did it, and then I actually forgot about it. And then, as the game went on, they asked about it, and I was like, yeah, it probably looked pretty cool, but I haven’t actually got to see it yet.”

As for head coach Andy Reid, he was amused by the banter between Mahomes and Kelce during the broadcast but emphasized that it all comes down to their ability to play off each other, just as they have done throughout their illustrious careers

Ultimately, Reid wasn’t all that surprised by the play — having seen them do it all the time in practice. In the end, he only cares about one thing: the results.

“He does it in practice every day, so I’m alright as long as it’s complete,” Reid said with a smile.
